The National War Memorial was initially constructed to honor those who served in the First World War. However, in 1982, it was rededicated to also commemorate the Second World War and the Korean War. Later in 2000, the Canadian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was incorporated to symbolize the sacrifice of all Canadians who have lost their lives or may still lose their lives in service to their nation.
